I. VERB TENSES (THÌ CỦA ĐỘNG TỪ)
Trong tiếng anh có 12 thì cơ bản. Chúng ta sẽ tập trung khai thác hướng ra đề liên quan đến các thì thông qua “signal words”.
“Signal words” là gì? Trong mỗi câu đề của Toeic, người ra đề sẽ luôn có một tín hiệu cụ thể để hướng dẫn thí sinh tìm ra đáp án đúng dựa vào những từ tín hiệu đó.
Ex: On weekends the Italian restaurant (be) often busy all hours of the day and night.
🡪 Ở đây chúng ta sẽ có 2 “signal words” là “often” và “on weekends” thường được sử dụng trong thì hiện tại đơn. Vì vậy, đáp án đúng là: “is”

Trong đó:
- “watch” là động từ có quy tắc, chỉ cần them -ed trong thì quá khứ và các thì hoàn thành.
- “write” là động từ bất quy tắc.
2. Bản chất và dấu hiệu nhận biết của các thì
2.1. The present simple (Thì hiện tại đơn)
- Diễn đạt thói quen
Eg: Ms. Stanhope always tries to consult her colleagues on the budget.
(Bà Stanhope luôn luôn cố gắng tham vấn với đồng nghiệp của bà về ngân sách.)
- Diễn đạt một lịch trình có sẵn
Eg: Installing air-cooling systems is scheduled to begin at 10 A.M. and end at 3 P.M.
(Việc lắp đặt hệ thống điều hoà được dự kiến bắt đầu vào 10 a.m và kết thúc vào lúc 3 p.m.)
Signal words: always, usually, often, sometimes, never, seldom, rarely, hardly, every day/ month…., on Sundays, …

2.2. The present continuous (thì hiện tại tiếp diễn)
- Diễn đạt một hành động đang xảy ra tại thời điểm nói
Eg: Edgeware Electronics is now seeking regional distributors for its products
(Edgware Electronics hiện đang tìm kiếm các nhà phân phối khu vực cho các sản phẩm của mình.)
- Diễn đạt một sự sắp xếp đã lên lịch sẵn
Eg: The advertising company is coming next Tuesday to discuss possible models for the new campaign.
(Các công ty quảng cáo vào sẽ đến thứ ba tuần tới để thảo luận về mô hình có thể cho chiến dịch mới)
Signal words: now, at this time, at the moment, at present, right now, for the time being

2.3. The present perfect tense (Thì hiện tại hoàn thành) & The present perfect continuous tense (Thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn)
- Chỉ một hành động bắt đầu trong quá khứ và kéo dài đến hiện tại hoặc tương lai
Eg: Since taking on the position of CEO, Ms. Gelson has attempted to improve the output rate of the company by reorganizing, its manufacturing process.
(Từ khi trở thành Giám đốc điều hành, bà Gelson đã cố gắng cải thiện tỉ lệ đầu ra của công ty bằng cách tái cơ cấu quá trình sản xuất.)
- Nhấn mạnh tính kết quả của một hành động
Eg: Once you have completed the enclosed questionnaire, please send your response back to us by Monday.
(Khi bạn đã hoàn thành bảng câu hỏi đính kèm, làm ơn gửi phản hồi của bạn lại cho chúng tôi vào thứ hai)
-Nhấn mạnh tính liên tục của một hành động
Eg: According to a student at Smith Elementary School, you have been meeting with them regularly for several months now to research the issue.
(Theo một học sinh ở Tiểu học Smith, anh đã gặp bọn trẻ 1 cách thường xuyên trong nhiều tháng để nghiên cứu về vấn đề này)
Signal word: just, already, yet, recently, lately, for (2 years), since (2000), never, all day long, how long, all year, all month, ….
Present evidence: “she is so tired” và “all the morning”,

2.4. The past simple tense (thì quá khứ đơn)
- Diễn đạt hành động đã chấm dứt thuộc về quá khứ
Eg: The report on existing home sales showed an unexpected rise in sales last year.
(Báo cáo về doanh số bán nhà hiện tại cho thấy doanh số tăng đột xuất vào năm ngoái.)
- Diễn đạt những hành động xảy ra liên tiếp nhau thuộc về quá khứ
Eg: He knocked her down, grabbed her purse and ran away.
Signal words: last year, last month, yesterday, 2 months ago…

2.5. The past continuous tense (Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn)
- Diễn đạt 2 hành động xảy ra song song
Eg: While she was cooking, her husband was fixing his car.
- Diễn đạt một hành động đang xảy ra thì 1 hành động khác chen ngang
Eg: When Mac-Lim Co. was acquiring Nissan Ltd. last year, some of the consumer goods divisions were closed.
(Khi công ty Mac-Lim đang mua lại công ty trách nhiệm hữu hạn Nissan năm ngoái, một vài bộ phận bán hàng đã bị đóng cửa.)
- Diễn đạt một hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm thuộc về quá khứ
Eg: She was lying on the beach at this time last summer
Signal word: at this time last summer, at 8 o’clock last night, at this moment 2 months ago, when she came, while….

2.6. The past perfect tense (Thì quá khứ hoàn thành) & The past perfect continuous tense (Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn)
- Diễn đạt một hành động xảy ra trước một hành động khác đã chấm dứt trong quá khứ.
Eg: Prior to the new laws, there had been no penalty for polluting.
- Nhấn mạnh tính liên tục của một hành động xảy ra trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ.
Eg: He said our new catalog of kitchen equipment, which he had been expecting, had not arrived yet.
Signal words: before, by, by the time + mệnh đề ở quá khứ

2.7. The Future simple Tense (Thì tương lai đơn) & The near Future (Thì tương lai gần)

Diễn đạt 1 quyêt định tại thời điểm nói. Eg: Ok, I will accept your offer	Diễn đạt dự định đã lên kế hoạch (plan/intentions) Eg: The internal audit is going to identify operational and financial risks our company is facing at the monent.
Diễn đat một lời dự đoán không có căn cứ Eg: I think the reserved press seating area will be far too large.	Diễn đạt sự dự đoán mang tính chắc chắn hơn, dựa vào tín hiệu ở hiện tại. Eg: Kenneth Johnson and Nelly Hung are both gifted singers, so this musical is going to be a huge success regardless of who gets the leading role.
Signals: I think, I am afraid, I fear that, I am sure/not sure that…	Signals: I have bought….
Other signals: in the future, tomorrow, tonight, this week, next week, …

2.9. The Future perfect tense (Thì tương lai hoàn thành)
- Diễn đạt môt hành động sẽ hoàn thành trước một thời gian xác định thuộc về tương lai
Eg: Governor Gerald Yates will have been in office for over 4 years by the time the next state election is held.
(Thống đốc Gerald Yates sẽ đã làm việc cho văn phòng được khoảng 4 năm khi cuộc bầu cử tiếp theo được tổ chức)
Signals: By+ future time/ By the time + mệnh đề ở hiện tại.

2.8. The Future Continuous Tense (Thì tương lai tiếp diễn)
- Diễn đạt một hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm xác định ở tương lai
Eg: The visiting delegates from Asia will be dining at the Arirang restaurant tonight at 7:30.
(Đại biểu sắp tới của từ châu Á sẽ có bữa ăn tại nhà hàng Arirang lúc 7:30 tối nay.)
Signals: at this time tomorrow, at present next summer, at this moment next Friday…
